Projects

Over the years the studios produced several shortfilms. Starting in 2004 the first film to be published in 2006 was "Abenteuer-Arbeitsweg". In 2008 "IOCC - The Police in a Race Against Time" premiered, being the second stop-motion movie produced by the team. "verwohnt" was in 2012 the first live-action movie that has been produced by the studios, featuring nevertheless a large amount of stop motion elements. In the following years members of the Studios were involved in two cooperations, being "Ende Mai" by Maria Schwab and "Bootstrapping" by Elena Zhivun. "Fast Forward" was shot in the same manner as it is named, namely very fast. 2015, at the 11 1/2th anniversery, the film was presented. Since 2014 the studios are working on their latest major film, , which is expected to premier in January 2018. Stay tuned!

Fast Forward

Fast Forward

What first started as a training exercise, soon turned out to be more. During the summer of 2013, as our previous project „verwohnt“ was already finished, the Krmpf Krmpf Studios got together to discuss ideas for a non-animation project. At the KKS retreat in Scharten, Upper Austria, the group got together to discuss ideas of improvement and was able to set two major goals which should be addressed through an intermediate project. Those goals were, the learning the use of the new Black Magic Cinema Camera and writing as well as directing dialog. In preparation of project „QD“, the original successor of „verwohnt“, we decided to introduce a short film concept to provide a framework for additional ideas we planned on testing. At the retreat we came up with the initial idea of a play set in a room that is subjected to the manipulation of time. We further wanted to only work with two actors. Within the mere amount of two weeks Ehrentraud and Magdalena turned the ideas into a script. Due to the fact that David was about to move to California to complete his studies, we needed to follow a tight schedule to further our project. Despite the short pre-production time, the team was able to secure a suitable location at the „Katholisch Theologische Privatuniversität“. Eva Krägeloh and Gerald Hauzenberger joined the team and filled the positions of script/continuity and boom operator. Rafael Weißengruber and Glenna Weber, both students at the „Konservatorium Wien“ at that time, were cast as the main protagonists and only had two days until their scenes had to be read and rehearsed. Two and a half days were used to shoot; two days of boom pick up and 18 minutes of final film were shot. During the postproduction we continued to experiment with new techniques and developed a workflow that enabled us to deal with the large amounts of raw material. VFX and Grading prompted new challenges, yet could be overcome and in time for our 11.5 years' anniversary celebration, in early spring of 2015, Fast Forward was finished.

Two people happen to meet in a room. As they get to know each other, they fall in love. Although the room seems empty, time passes by quickly and the relationship is put on “fast forward”. The depicted relationship had no real life counterpart. Bits and pieces were taken from personal experience and fused into a story that was driven by ordinary character traits. The fact that a common generic type of relationship is depicted in a condensed style, unveils the patterns that emerge in many relationships. For instance, loveable quirks the character first fell in love with, can turn into an annoying habits. As the story progresses, the characters' relationship is broken in pieces and both characters go back to where their journey first started and hence leave the room. Since the beginning the room itself was thought of as an active character, involved in different scenarios. Both characters are oblivious to sudden appearances of objects, change in lighting and location. At some point they even seem to live in different dimensions, as depicted during their skype session or after their shared holiday adventures. Due to this, we wanted the spacial setting to be as neutral as possible, to focus the audiences attention towards the dialogue.

Bootstrapping

Bootstrapping

Story & Sound: Elena Zhivun, David Wurm
Charakter & Set Design: Elena Zhivun
Animation: Elena Zhivun
Camera & VFX: David Wurm
Music: Ambrose Field, Joe Colley

This small stop motion short was shot while David was abroad at the University of California, Berkeley 2013/14. In collaboration with his colleague Elena Zhivun they were researching optical Cs magnetometers, yet on the weekend the soldering table was turned into a movie studio. Bootstrapping is the tale of the fight for survival of a small “bug” in an electronic world. On its search for food he has to face dangerous enemies.

This movie builds on the technical expertise from IOCC and verwohnt and seamless visual effects. The design of characters and sets by Elena Zhivun combined with the music from Ambrose Field and Joe Colley then created its unique atmosphere.

Ende Mai

Ende Mai

„Ende Mai“ a short film by Maria Schwab, tells the story of teenage Philip. While curbed by his strict father, he falls for a girl who seems to be all but independent.

The coming of age story has been in Maria Schwab’s mind for some time. After working with David on her previous short “workingtime”, she started discussing the script that would later become “Ende Mai”. Early 2013 the script circled in on a rural summer setting and preparation for a five day shoot in Welzheim, Baden-Würtemberg started. The dense shoot was mounted on a small crew with Elena Goldberg and Vincent Gaschler in the lead roles. Among the crew were two Krmpf Krmpf Studios members, David served as DP and later head of postproduction and edit and Alexander as colorist. Eva Krägeloh, a later core collaborator, first served as first assistant director and script/continuity. The finished film premiered on September 28th, 2013 in Munich and is available on DVD along with bonus material.

verwohnt
verwohnt

Cautiously a student enters her flat, hoping not to startle up anything in the flat. Verwohnt shows a flat in which everyday objects become a primary part of life. The toaster as well as the TV take on the role of a mother and try to assert their best interest onto the student. With Verwohnt the Krmpf Krmpf Studios entered uncharted waters. New ideas for a live-action movie had come to our minds after the successful realisation of previous projects. During a meeting in January 2011, those ideas were further developed and a new project begun. Although the final direction we wanted to take this new project to wasn’t yet decided on, the date for starting shooting was set: September 2011.

In February we decided on letting the film deal with a story of control and manipulation. Two months later in April, we had narrowed down our location to a friend’s flat, Klara Porsch, who let us use it during the summer months to shoot the movie. Further we had found the leading actress, Ulrike Achatz and decided on including stop motion sequences to bring diverse items to life. Up until August Alex and David worked on the exposé and later the script. The shooting itself took place from 3rd to 21st September 2011, leaving us with 600 single assets and 10 hours of material. During those 21 days Ulrike had probably spoken to more objects than people, but it was her effort which gave our new movie a lead in the midst of inanimate objects. Hereby we like to thank everybody who helped us producing the movie; all the helping hands who invested time and supported us in our process!

The postproduction extended up to October 2012. Coordinating four students’ schedules who studied at three different universities in two countries posed hurdles we had to overcome. In order to achieve any results, Alex took it up on himself to sift through the material and finish the edit. More than 90 visual effects and stop motion shots had to be dealt with. After the main filming was concluded four pick-up shoots followed. Some of the produced material was used for an in-film fake TV movie and was done in cooperation with “Gladii Uniti”. In November, Theresa Grün and Manfred Pilsz were on set in the Kulturzentrum HOF, an effort which mostly went into a spin off fake trailer “Der Bartlose Sohn”. In spring we asked Ulrike to once again get into character and finally, in September, we decided on the title “verwohnt”. The logo was created two weeks later.

On November 17th 2012 the film premieres in the Moviemento Cinema in Linz.

IOCC

IOCC - The Police in a Race Against Time

>>Go to the IOCC website

IOCC was successor to Abenteuer Arbeitsweg in many ways. From the past experience we had lots of ideas for a similar style film so we found a rather typical method to decide on the next project: A flow chart of possible genres we evaluated to decide on action/spy/heist movie. Similar to Abenteuer Arbeitsweg a kind of TV show provides a framing story for criminals entering a competition to prank the head of police in London. As strange as it might seem today, in 2007 we felt confident one could make a comedic action film about something that looks like a terror attack for the majority of the runtime.

The production saw numerous improvements. There were small active lamps hidden in the Lego sets. A large mechanical construction coined AArbeitsplatform allowed us to pan, dolly and tilt the camera as well as set up lights. For the first time we used visual effects such as a digital countdown and special effects such as real fire for a Lego car-stunt and put an entire set piece on water. The visual were complimented by a composed soundtrack and both German an English dubbing.

Abenteuer-Arbeitsweg

Abenteuer-Arbeitsweg

The animation movie “Abenteuer Arbeitsweg” takes place in Legoworld and depicts an episode of popular and beloved late night show “Abenteuer Arbeitsweg” (Workday Adventure). The show airs every Saturday and gives an insight into different Lego figures’ work days. In our case the episode follows Mr. Kalkauer, a zeppelin driver. As special guest stars the famous “Lego dancers” will perform.

The production of our first movie Abenteuer Arbeitsweg took about two years. More than a year was necessary to develop knowledge about stop- motion techniques. The material for the movie was then shot in two weeks and another few weeks to do editing and postproduction. During this demanding time the Making of, which gives an insight look into a typical workday at the Krmpf Krmpf Studios, was produced.
On 20th January 2006, at 7 pm, the premiere was held at the Dompfarre Linz; more than 100 viewers showed up to see both the movie and the look behind the scenes. Abenteuer Arbeitsweg started us as a studio and received numerous awards, most notably the Golden Nica in the category u19 at the Prix Ars Electonica 2006.
